Elusive Equity, Empathy, and Empowerment

One Woman’s Journey through the Challenges of Gender Bias in the Early Twenty-First Century

My name is Pandora Angel. I have been a practicing physician for 30years. During those years, I spent 23 years as an emergency physician at a university medical center and an affiliated hospital. This book is not about the well-documented drama of emergency medicine, but about the challenges, I faced as a female emergency physician in what is still perceived as a male profession. Although half of medical school graduating classes are made up of women (Contorno 2014), the decision-making bodies are male dominated.

I wrote this book to add the voice of a female physician. Women as a group confront additional hurdles throughout their personal and professional lives that may be unbeknownst to male colleagues. As individual incidents, many demeaning and undermining events appear seemingly insignificant or a mere slight. But over a lifespan, the additional toll and energy drain for women struggling to excel and succeed is monumental. It requires a lot of effort to overcome the negative aspects of our culture toward women to have good lives as working women and mothers.
